Step into the Poison Garden. Wisteria is a channeling the magical, sweeping, and delightfully unhinged cinematic etude. Designed to push a high school student's expressive limits, the music perfectly mirrors the lifecycle of a creeping, destructive vine. It opens with a slithery, secretive chalumeau ostinato before launching into a quirky, triplet-laced 3/4 waltz. Suddenly, the chaos melts away into an expansive, gorgeous 16-measure lyrical section, giving the performer immense rubato freedom to float a haunting, vocal melody. But don't get too comfortable—the etude concludes with a terrifying, unbroken sequence.
