Shadows on the Forest Floor is a minimalist exploration of movement, limitation, and the hidden life of the forest understory. Inspired by the erratic, undulating scurry of a millipede, this modern composition is built on a foundation of strict mathematical and structural constraints. The piece utilizes a rigidly restricted sonic palette, divided between two distinct voices: the higher voice operates as the expressive "body" of the melody, while the lower voice acts as the relentless, scuttling "legs."
To capture the creature's unpredictable navigation over roots and leaves, the 52-measure piece journeys through seven distinct time signatures. From the heavy, pulling groove of the main theme to the frantic scurrying of the bridge, the shifting meters create a lopsided, hypnotic momentum that finally comes to a dramatic rest in the shadows.
